The oral lipid tolerance test assesses whole body lipid homeostasis. The ability to quickly normalize the hyperlipemic episode following administration of a lipid bolus (olive oil) provides integrated information about enteric lipid absorption, lipid packaging into lipoproteins, and tissue-specific metabolism of lipoproteins and lipids.
Thus, an altered oral lipid tolerance test calls for tests of lipid absorption, hepatic lipid production, but also de novo lipogenesis and whole-body lipid utilization (by indirect calorimetry).
A minimum of 6-8 mice per group is required.
