General content

The undergraduate course in medicine comprises six years’ study at two levels; the Master of Medicine (3 years, 180 ECTS credits) is the second level and the logical follow-on from the Bachelor of Medicine (3 years, 180 ECTS credits).

Holders of the Master of Medicine are allowed to take the Swiss Federal Examination in Medicine, which is common to all Swiss Medicine Faculties and is governed by the requirements of the Federal Law on the Medical Professions.

The Master’s course enables students to develop the necessary skills at the right level of knowledge, know-how and behavioural skills to deal with all common medical situations from their first day of practice (according to the requirements indicated in PROFILES, the national reference framework for undergraduate medical teaching).

The university is not responsible for specialist training; indeed, the Diploma in Specialist Medical Practice falls under the remit of the Swiss Institute for Postgraduate and Continuing Medical Education (ISFM, which is independent of the FMH).
