Career Café

Pathways, decisions, know the basics

A quick introduction to the essentials of your career development, whether on the academic path or elsewhere. Each month, the discussion will include regular topics on careers, followed by particular themes of interest.

The Career Café is designed for all UNIL doctoral candidates and postdocs, no matter their research background or career goals. in order to facilitate participation, it is held monthly at varying times and alternately in English and French.

We stongly encourage you to take part in a Career Café before registering for any other Career modules or requesting individual career counselling with the Graduate Campus.

Clarifying and designing what comes next after the postdoc or the PhD

This workshop provides you with the knowledge and technique for your individual career development. It is aimed at UNIL doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers, no matter what your career goals (academic or elsewhere), to help you consider your options and make an active, intentioned transition as you move out of the PhD or postdoctoral phase.

Skills Inventory with TRIMA

This workshop is designed to help postdocs identify and develop their professional profile based on their experience in the academic environment and elsewhere. Academic Careers: Demands, Expectations and Preparation

The aim of this workshop is to sensitize participants to the demands and expectations linked to pursuing an academic career. It presents the foundational elements of self-presentation that apply to hiring processes on the academic track, from applications to interview.

Based on discussion and intensive practical work, the programme will include presenting your research and motivations for the academic path, and preparing your CV. Participants will work together to develop their CVs and self-presentation.

Applications for non-academic opportunities

This workshop will focus on the essentials for any application for employment in a non-academic context: putting together the practical tools of CV and cover letter.

In addition to addressing the different elements to include in application material, we will explore how to read a job ad, identify keywords and present the corresponding knowledge and skills you can contribute.

A coherent online profile on your professional networking site is the modern business card: it helps people identify who you are and what you are doing. Networking is commonly acknowledged to be vital for professional development, but can be a challenge for many. How can we best make a connection with others, in person and online? What impact can it have for our careers, whether in research or elsewhere? How to maintain authenticity while we move outside of our personal comfort zones? In this highly interactive, practical workshop, we will explore the benefits and techniques of networking for professional development.

Decision, Decisions!

Taking the Lead in Your Career Transition

Through four interactive sessions, we will explore some of the key underpinnings of what drives individuals to struggle in taking the lead on managing their career development. We will look at the factors that create conflict and raise difficulty in decision-making and implementation – for example limiting beliefs, risk aversion, and self-sabotage. This workshop will encourage you to explore your current career trajectory and challenge you to evaluate the effectiveness of decision-making capabilities while evaluating the opportunities for change.
