Venice International University

Venice International University (VIU) is an international network of universities, based on the island of San Servolo in Venice. UNIL joined the network in 2014.

Programme

Every year, the partner universities produce a programme that prepares students to tackle current global problems. The autumn semester (September to December) focuses on human and social sciences, while the spring semester (March to May) is dedicated to environmental issues. Teaching (which is aimed mainly at Master’s students, but is also open to undergraduates) is delivered in English.

Basic modules

Students choose from 18-20 courses in the following areas:

  • Global challenges
  • Cultures of the world
  • Italian life, culture and history

Specialist modules

Specialist courses are offered in the areas below:

  • Economics, management and digital technologies applied to cultural heritage (autumn semester)
  • Environmental management and sustainable development (spring semester)

Related activities

Various related activities are included (visits, lectures and cultural events). A weekend in another part of Italy is also organised.

Student participation

Each partner university can send 10 to 15 students to VIU each year. Interested students can register with UNIL through the exchange agreements database.

Teacher participation

The partner universities undertake to send one member of teaching staff to VIU on secondment each year. Their time there gives teaching staff the opportunity to expand their network, embark on joint research projects and discover new approaches in their field. Teaching at VIU

A call is launched every year in Autumn and Spring for the organisation of short programs ((PhD Academy, Graduate Seminar, Summer/Winter school). More information.

In addition it is possible to use the VIU facilities to organise seminars and conferences outside the period of the call. More information.
