How to Make International Economic Law (More) Sustainable?

International Economic Law is seen by many as fostering predominantly liberalization of trade and investment flows and creating a favorable business environment for multinational enterprises. This may not be totally wrong but in the last 30 years a lot of discussions have taken place to make this area of law a real contributor to sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of 2015 ... What has happened and what is missing?

Belen Olmos-Giupponi is Professor and Head of Law at the Portsmouth Law School in the University of Portsmouth (UK). Her research is eminently interdisciplinary and lies at the intersection between environmental law and international economic law.  Her academic portfolio has a clear focus on climate change and energy law, transnational law processes, dispute resolution, and the regulation of new technologies. Her work on transnational law is internationally recognized and explores the role that law has in tacking global legal challenges, such as climate change and transition to a low carbon economy. She has provided advice to the House of Lords on the future trade relations with the European Union in a post-Brexit context and been included as suitable candidate to be appointed as an arbitrator and expert by the European Commission.She is a member of different scientic committees and research networks, such as the Alexander Von Humboldt Sftiftung (Germany), Brown Advance Research Institutes (United States) and the Max Weber Programme Alumni network (European University Institute). She actively participates in international advocacy around issues concerning environmental inequalities.
