A century into laboratory and clinical research on the plasticity of sex and gender, what has changed? In the 1920s, the plasticity of the endocrine system appeared poised to change not only the purview of scientific and medical intervention, but the social and political world along with it. Today, neuroscientific studies of brain sex and its evident plasticity promise to biologize trans difference and remediate prior categorical exclusions. This talk questions the impact of those shifts by pointing to the persistent use of intersex data to found not only measures of all queer or trans differences from the norm, but the measurement of normative sex itself. The history of sex plasticity casts doubt not on the novel quality of contemporary scientific practice, but the material underpinnings of the scientific and medical epistemology of sex and gender.
Bio: Jules Gill-Peterson is an associate professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of Histories of the Transgender Child (2018) and a general co-editor of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly. Her next book, A Short History of Trans Misogyny, will be published by Verso.
