Over the past couple of decades a wealth of scholarship has questioned standard Eurocentric accounts of international human rights law. Paying attention to the agency of minorities and Global South actors in the development of human rights, and to deep contestations about the nature and horizons of international human rights law, this body of literature has profoundly altered contemporary accounts of the field and its practice. In this lecture, Luis Eslava will briefly revisit this body of critical literature in order to sketch nine possible lessons. The aim of this exercise is to demonstrate the generative force of these critiques and the value of a critical approach to international human rights law in a rapidly changing global order.

Prof. Eslava will speak on zoom. If you would like to attend his talk, we invite you to come to ANT- 2097 on the 19th April at 10:15. (If you are unable to come to campus, please send an email to evelyne.schmid@unil.ch to request the zoom link, ideally at least a day in advance.)
