In the frame of the ISSR Research Colloquium "Enquêter en sciences des religions : psychologie, sociologie et sciences sociales des migrations"

Summary :
This presentation advances a number of provocations to creatively expand epistemological practice at the intersections of visual anthropology, film, art practice and ethnography. In particular, I shall be discussing director Andrey Tarkovsky’s notion of ‘sculpting in time’ (1986) and his distinct way of materially recreating memory, as well as contemporary media artist Yongseok Oh’s expansion of the frame of memory in his Classic series (2009/2010). Finally, Rubén Guzman’s experimental essay film The Noise of Time (2022) explores the ethically problematic deeds of an early 20 century anthropologist involved in anthropological investigations and excavations on indigenous territory in Argentina; deeds that have to be redeemed in the spiritual world, and ultimately ask for restitution.
