Bicycle Infrastructure: The Devil Is in the Details
It is not difficult to describe the ideal bicycle infrastructure. It is well described in the Design Manual for Bicycle Traffic, the CROW Manual. We all know the five main requirements: coherence, comfort, directness, safety and health, attractiveness.
But when it comes to the actual building of the infrastructure, it is a different story. The theoretical design often does not fit into the actual circumstances. For instance there is not enough space for an acceptably wide path, the hill is too steep, the corner too sharp. The details, essential for the construction, are not clearly described or drawn in the design. It is exactly these details that distinguish the difference between good and bad infrastructure, between happy or disappointed cyclists.
In the presentation the philosophy of good cycle infrastructure will be explained, and some details – and how to deal with them – will be shown.
