Unravelling the complexities of law and space: Citizens becoming spatio-legal detectives, the case of Karabağlar, Turkey

By examining the complex relationship between law and space in seismic risk management, this presentation explores how citizens living in the Karabağlar risky area become spatio-legal detectives to reduce uncertainties arising from the implementation of Disaster Law in Turkey. The study investigates how the local community establishes a strong interconnection between the law and their territory, collectively developing spatio-legal consciousness to unravel uncertainties that impact their daily lives.

Irem Ince Keller is a PhD candidate in Geography at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, where she is a part of a research team « IF - Informing Futures » at the Institute of Geography and Sustainability. Currently, she is working on her PhD research under the supervision of Professor Jean Ruegg, focusing on legal geography of seismic risk management.
