Rosewood is a trade term for a wide range of tropical hardwoods. It comprises thirty-three species of very expensive tropical hardwood. The cultural attachment of rosewood to China’s history has resulted in a trade of the species across the globe especially in Africa. This has had several resultant effects.

This talk focuses on the intricacies of the Ghana-China rosewood trade. Delving into the access strategies employed by various actors. It pays attention to roles played by various institutional actors at the national, regional and community levels. Situating the discussion on how transnational forces impact local natural resource governance, the talk also focuses on the direct impact the rosewood trade had on a particular Ghanaian community in mapping up strategies to access communal benefits from the rosewood trade. The talk will end on the power dynamics of various actors and it is the implication on the trade.
