Catastrophic flash floods in Valencia on 29.10.2024
On October 29th 2024, a an isolated low-pressure system combined with warn humid air brought over a year's worth of precipitation to several areas in eastern Spain, causing extreme flash floods in the Valencia region. With over 200 people killed and over $10 billion in total damage, this event has become one of the worst natural disasters in Spanish history, and the deadliest flash flood in Europe since 1967. We will present the meteorological conditions leading up to this disaster and discuss some storm characteristics. Time permitting, we will also address the difficulties of communicating about attribution studies for such events.
