Tracing Nepali masculinities: Some Historical, political and cultural dimensions
Archana Thapa (Uprety) is an independent scholar, writer and founder Director of
Akshar Creations, a publishing house in Nepal. She has done her Ph.d from Tribhuvan University with a focus on gender studies and is the only woman publisher in Nepal. Thapa writes both in Nepali and English and has edited and published two collections of Nepali women's personal narrations:
Telling A Tale and
Swaastitvako Khoj, as well as has performed on the stage adaptation of
Telling A Tale. She was the senior member of the team that drafted the
Five Year Strategic Plan (2014-19) of National Women Commission, Nepal. She has published academic papers and articles in national and internal journals and magazines. She is the recipient of the
ArThinkSouthAsia fellowship for the year 2014/15. At present, Thapa is doing a month long fellowship in London with Free Word Publication house, and is also editing anthologies of Nepali men and women's personal collections. She is also assisting One World Theatre for the stage adaption of women's personal narration which is programmed to stage in Kathmandu in August 2015.
Sanjeev Uprety is a professor at the Central Department of English, Tribhuvan University. Following the completion of his Ph.d in English literature and cultural studies from Brown University, he has also done post-doctoral research on South Asian masculinities at Harvard and UC-Berkeley universities in 2012-13. Sanjeev recently completed a research project for UNDP (Nepal) titled "Nepali masculinities and sexual and gender based violence", and is working on a book length project on Nepali masculinities.
A newspaper columnist and an art critic, Sanjeev is also a theater artist as well as a playwright. Public shows of his new play Makai ko Arkai kheti (A different cultivation of maize) are supposed to begin toward the beginning of October this year in Kathmandu. Sanjeev supervised the construction of IMAP (Interactive Mapping and Archival Project) a digital archive of art and theater related materials of Nepal, and has written a number of papers on Nepali literature, art and theater. He is also the author of two books in Nepali. His first book was
Ghanchakkar, a bestselling Nepali novel (which deals with the theme of personal and collective / societal madness), and his second book
Siddhanta Ka Kura interprets various western theories--including modernism, postmodernism, post-structuralism, post-colonialism and so on--by linking them to Nepali cultural texts and contexts.
