In the past six months, Madagascar has considered fishing access agreements with two countries/entities, China and the the EU. Those have been praised as initiatives to develop a blue economy in the country. This talk will discuss the various perspectives on development through tuna fishing in Madagascar. It will discuss how national politics have shaped or ignored the fishery and its fishers in different parts of the country, within a blue economy narrative. It will also show how the the materiality of tuna has brought in various views on the resources by fishers and on development aid by other actors in the field of fisheries. The presentation will be based on a « réflexion à chaud » from interviews and observations during fieldwork done the weeks before.
