Abstract
In this workshop, I will present the first six months of my doctoral research on the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS). The EUSS is provided to EU nationals wishing to remain in the UK after Brexit. It has a variety of controversial features, such as automated application processing and the use of an online system to access records, rather than a physical identity card. My research examines the implementation of the EUSS across multiple sites (the home office and private-sector contractors, status checkers such as employers and landlords, lawyers and the third-sector, and status holders), trying to understand the interaction between these sites and what accounts for the scheme’s impacts on users.
Bio
James Besse is a PhD student in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (STIS) at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the implementation of EU Settlement Scheme, IoT and automation on university campuses, and social movements.
