This is a research on the different interpretations about the uses of internet in care institutions (mostly shelters) that tend to vulnerable teenagers in Brazil. I will present how the staff and direction of those institutions give preference to protection of those subjects, rather than participation, and define those artefacts as something capable of causing harm. The teenagers, however, have a much more nuanced use that is an extension of their everyday lives. I will analyse those different interpretations according to STS theories (mutual shaping and semiotic approaches), and compare that analysis under a children’s rights perspective.
