Behind and Beyond the Short-Term City

Inquiries and critiques about the negative effects of touristification have multiplied in the last years, and constituted an important venue for the thematic, theoretical and methodological reconfiguration of critical urban studies. The presentation, besides a critical reflection about the state-of-the-art and a specific focus upon Italian cities, as well as upon the struggles to regulate short-term rentals, will highlight three potential directions of future research on the topic. The first is aimed to shift the focus from tourists to temporary inhabitants in general and the politics of city attractiveness The second is about the ‘airbnbification’ of the housing market at large and the diffusion of mid-term rentals. The third is about the relationship between urban tourism and rentier capitalism.

Filippo Celata is full professor at the University of Rome La Sapienza where he teaches economic geography and spatial data analysis. In the last years he coordinated several studies about the platformization of tourism, the effects of airbnbification, the challenges of short-term rentals regulation, the impact of temporary populations, which were published on journals such as Urban Studies, Annals of Tourism Research, Cambridge Journal of Regions, Geoforum, City, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, and which have had an important influence on the public debate on these issues in Italy.
