The snowfall event over Western Switzerland on 09.01.2024

At the beginning of January 2024, an advection of cold air in an easterly flow reached most parts of Europe. On the 9th of January, a small and weak cold drop over France generated a southerly flow over the Alps which led to significant snowfall over Western Switzerland. 15 cm of fresh snow was measured in Geneva on the 10th of January. Although precipitations were predicted by weather models, the location, the duration, and the amount of snow remained difficult to forecast. This event is a good example of how challenging forecasting snow and issuing warnings can be.
