Severe thunderstorm in La Chaux-de-Fonds: weather context & investigation

On 24th July 2023, a heavy thunderstorm swept through La Chaux-de-Fonds valley in Swiss Jura. Within 10 minutes, the storm associated extreme winds caused substantial damage to the big city and MeteoSwiss weather station recorded an unprecedented wind gust of 217 km/h. Following this traumatic event, MeteoSwiss conducted an in-depth investigation to identify the weather phenomena that triggered such damage, relying on radar measurements and aerial surveys taken immediately after the event.

During this session, we will address the weather context in which that storm developed, the main findings of this investigation on the phenomenon characterization and how we can rank such an extreme event in the climatology of the region.
