On Tuesday the 7th of May 2024 at 13:00, Dr. Élie Kirchner (MeteoSwiss, weather forecaster) will give a talk entitled "Not-so-severe thunderstorms on July 11, 2023 : meteorological context & warning strategies".

Abstract: On July 11, 2023, most numerical weather models predicted a severe "derecho" – a linear mesoscale convective system associated with strong wind gusts over large areas – somewhere between France, Switzerland and Germany. Weather services from these three countries all issued maximum level warnings for extreme thunderstorms. However, the wind gusts, while strong, turned out to be much less severe than expected. In this session, we will look at the meteorological context of this situation and discuss the warning strategies.
