Hailstorms in Switzerland
Every year hailstorms cause substantial damage to agriculture and insured property in Switzerland. At the same time reliable ground observations are still sparse and prediction of hailstorms remains challenging. All three aspects make hail a formidable scientific challenge.
Substantial progress has been made in Switzerland in the last few years regarding the observation of hail on the ground and by weather radars. The new observation systems include automatic hail sensors and crowd-sourced hail observations. A new radar-based hail climatology is available, highlighting areas that are frequently affected by hailstorms. In the scClim project, trends in hail frequency in northern and southern Switzerland are studied and first simulations of hailstorms in a warmer climate will soon be available.
