Data have always been the lifeblood of clinical trials and research. However, the volume and complexity of the data generated have increased considerably due to several factors, including the use of wearables, the availability of administrative and research data, the integration of electronic health records, and the increase in patient-generated data. These additional data offer new opportunities that can potentially accelerate the development of healthcare interventions, improve the quality of care, reduce costs, and thus make research more efficient. Moreover, the use of large databases, automated data collection, data linkage, data science for clinical research, and the ways in which clinical trial data are generated, managed, and shared (data ‘’flows’’ in a clinical trial) have all become increasingly important for achieving efficient outcomes in both national and multinational trial settings.

In this current environment, clinical researchers face many challenges – challenges that also affect support infrastructures for clinical research such as the SCTO’s clinical trial units (CTUs), data centres at healthcare facilities, and biobanks. This year’s SCTO Symposium will address a range of related topics – including regulatory considerations, IT and infrastructure requirements, data governance, data sharing, and both local and national strategies – while taking into account the perspective of various stakeholders.

During the first part of the symposium, we will address technology and regulatory prerequisites, data integration from different sources, and governance issues. In the afternoon, we will delve into topics based on hands-on experience gained from specific national and international research projects.

What questions will the SCTO Symposium answer?

  • Clinical research in Switzerland should become more efficient and data-driven:
  • How can we achieve this?
  • What are the SCTO Network and its partners already doing at both the local and national levels?
  • What is missing?
  • Where are the challenges and what is needed to overcome them?

Presentations and discussions will be held in English.
