Polarization and social media platforms

Abstract:

First, I present several faces of political polarization. Then, I address the issues of disinformation and Echo Chamber, and whether platforms have amplified polarization. Referring to the development of the Alt-Tech, I address the dilemma of deplatforming extremists. In conclusion, I put forward a provocation: is polarization THE problem? And ask, would you meet anyone who didn't think like you?

Dr. Sébastien Salerno is a researcher and teacher at the University of Geneva. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods with communication theories, he studies platforms, their legal framework, content, and reception. His latest research focuses on the reception of content on social media platforms by young people and disinformation.
