Late Oligocene phosphorites of Baja California

Phosphate-rich sediments were deposited along the western margin of Mexico during the Late Oligocene. These sediments were related to upwelling along the eastern margin of the Pacific and are part of a suite of upwelling-related sediments, which formed along the western margin of North-, Central and South America during the Meso- and Cenozoic.

Our goal is to study the geochemistry and sedimentology of these deposits and to better date them, in order to study relationships between the deposition of these sediments and general changes in paleoceanography and the paleo-environment.
