Cell Envelope Biogenesis and Remodeling

Our aim is to understand how the most simple forms of life, bacteria, build their cell surface layers in time and space. To this end we use a combination of powerful imaging technologies allowing to visualize these processes in live cells and under native conditions. We study this fundamental process in the diderm model organisms Escherichia coli and Corynebacterium glutamicum. Importantly, maintaining cell envelope integrity is critical to bacterial survival and therefore a superb drug target in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
