Presentation

Welcome to the Department of Ecology and Evolution (aka, the DEE)

The DEE covers the breadth of ecology and evolution and aims to cultivate an atmosphere of scientific excellence which is respectful of people. We house independent research groups working on a wide range of different ecological, evolutionary, behavioural, and conservation biology topics that span fundamental to more applied research.

The topics of specific research groups can be found of the research groups pages and include: biology of invasive species, experimental and theoretical evolutionary ecology, evolutionary genomics and bioinformatics, social behaviour, evolution of cooperation and conflict, host-parasite interactions, human-wildlife interactions, conservation genetics, evolutionary conservation biology, population genetics and genomics, spatial ecology, evolution of adaptive traits, diversity and evolution of plant and animal reproductive systems, and ecology and evolution of plant-microbe symbioses.

The DEE is committed to excellence in teaching and plays an important role in the teaching of the Bachelor (BSc) biology curriculum. In addition, the DEE runs a highly successful Masters (MSc) program in Behaviour, Evolution and Conservation (BEC), and participates in PhD programs dedicated to training research students in ecology and evolution, or in quantitative biology, who will be well prepared for the future job market.

Located on the shores of Lake Geneva (Léman), the DEE is not only diverse in research and teaching, but also culturally diverse with over 25 nationalities among its collaborators. Research, as well as teaching at the MSc and PhD levels is conducted in English, and the department has an active social life. We prioritize establishing and maintaining a good environment and research culture in the department, whether in terms of personnel conduct, science, or sustainability.

Whether you are just visiting our website or whether you are visiting in person, a warm welcome to the DEE!
