Data-driven analysis of neuroimaging data using directed functional connectivity.
João Pedro de Matos Rodrigues, EPFL
Abstract: The use of directed functional connectivity metrics such as Granger causality with functional neuroimaging data was the subject of heated discussions in the last few years, for both BOLD and EEG signals. In this talk I will introduce some of these metrics, point out their limitations and how they can be identified and finally, some recent improvements.

Functional, Structural and Behavioral Correlates of Extended Training during Sleep Deprivation in Humans
Giulio Bernardi
Centre d'Investigation et de Recherche sur le Sommeil, CHUV
Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Pisa, Italy
Abstract: The talk will present the results of recent studies that have combined behavioral manipulations during prolonged wakefulness, high-density EEG and functional and structural MRI to investigate the effects of extended task practice on the human brain morpho-functional correlates, as well as their relationship with variations in cognitive performance. Moreover, evidence indicating a potential role of sleep in counteracting changes accumulated during wakefulness will be discussed.

Emotional processing: a central mechanism of change in psychotherapy
Dr. Ueli Kramer
Privat-Docent Faculté de Biologie et de Médecine, Université de Lausanne
Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Windsor, Canada
Research Fellow, Harvard Medical School, USA
Abstract: This talk defines emotional processing as a potentially central mechanism of change driving effects of psychological treatments, across mental disorders. This presentation will demonstrate this thesis by focusing mainly on process research conducted on patients with personality disorders. The different aspects of emotional processing will be discussed within an integrative understanding of how change in psychotherapy operates.

Neural responses to heartbeats shape conscious experience
Dr. Hyeongdong Park*
*EPFL, Lausanne
Abstract: Neural processing of internal bodily signals has been proposed to underlie subjective dimension of conscious experience including perceptual awareness, self-consciousness, and emotional feeling. I will present experimental evidences supporting the link between neural responses to heartbeats and perceptual awareness / self-consciousness.
