Launched in 2018 by the Equal Opportunity Committee of HEC Lausanne, the “Female Career Award HEC Lausanne (UNIL)” honours twice a year the outstanding academic career of a female researcher affiliated to an institution outside UNIL.

Nominated for the second award of 2019 by the Department of Accounting and Control at HEC Lausanne, Prof. Mary E. Barth, from Stanford University, is a leading figure in the field of accounting and financial analysis.

“Prof. Mary E. Barth is a remarkable woman, who has made a significant contribution to developing the field of accounting worldwide. In particular, she has promoted the application of an accounting system based on the concept of fair value,” comments Minyue Dong, professor in the Department of Accounting and Control at HEC Lausanne. Her expertise in reporting and accounting standards and her detailed understanding of the field are the result of an academic career that has lasted for over 35 years, building on 10 years’ practical experience in Arthur Andersen in the 1980s.

Prof. Mary E. Barth has contributed to some of the most influential and prestigious academic journals, including the Journal of Accounting Research, the Review of Accounting Studies and The Accounting Review, and served as a member of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), on which she sat for many years. She has also been editor-in-chief or deputy editor on several leading accounting journals.

An unparalleled commitment to an academic world that has been happy to acknowledge her contribution! Mary E. Barth has accordingly been awarded numerous prizes honoring and recognizing her activities and research including, for example, the AAA’s Competitive Manuscript Award and the Best Paper Award of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section of the AAA, which she has won three times.

The President of HEC Lausanne’s Equal Opportunity Committee, Prof. Marianne Schmid Mast, is delighted that Prof. Barth is coming on the first day of the new academic year, marking “the start of the year – by a happy coincidence of circumstances – with a symbol of equality”, she explains.
