Prof. John Antonakis included in the ranking of highly cited researchers

Every year, the Web of Science Group (WOS) uses the InCites analysis tool to identify the academic researchers who have produced a significant number of highly cited publications in their research field over the last 10 years. The WOS then selects the top 0.1% of those identified, who are listed on the global list of Highly Cited Researchers.

Why use citations to evaluate research? Eugène Garfield, the renowned American linguist who contributed to founding the Current Contents, Science Citation Index (SCI) explained in 1982 that citations can be viewed as “the currency by which researchers repay the intellectual debt they owe their predecessors”¹. Citations are still generally regarded as a strong indicator of researchers’ influence on their peers.

In 2019, the WOS listed 6,217 highly cited researchers, from 21 different fields and 60 countries. Five professors from the University of Lausanne have been honoured this year, including Prof. John Antonakis, from the Department of Organizational Behaviour at HEC Lausanne, along with four other professors from the Faculty of Biology and Medicine.

A total of 113 academics from all over the world were selected in the “Business and Economics” category, which covers areas including management, finance and economics. The only people on the list from Switzerland were Prof. John Antonakis from HEC Lausanne and Prof. Ernst Fehr from the University of Zurich.

John Antonakis expressed his pride in being recognized in this way, commenting, “although I’m the recipient of the honour, it’s the culture of our university and HEC Lausanne, in particular, that has helped shape my ideas, as well as the interactions with the doctoral students who work with me.”

Prof. John Antonakis’ research focuses mainly on leadership, power, personality and research methods. He has published numerous academic articles in prestigious journals, along with four books.
