At the core of our teaching and research is our concern with creating and transmitting a better understanding of the interplay of organizations’ internal and external environment. We are:
i) Integrative
Building on business policy and strategic management traditional hallmark, our research and teaching are integrative and thus draw from and bridge strategy knowledge with organizational behavior and human resources, corporate finance, social development and sustainability, marketing, industrial organization, operations management and the management of information systems.
ii) Multi-disciplinary and multi-methods
Consistent with our distinctively integrative approach, the theories and tools that inform our research and teaching come from different social science disciplines including economics, sociology, psychology, political science, communication studies, psychology and philosophy, among others. Members of the department embrace a multi-disciplinary view and acknowledge the relevance of different epistemologies and methodologies in research and teaching. This is our second distinctive trait.
iii) Committed to high quality relevant research
Department members conduct research on the fundamental questions in competitive, cooperative and corporate strategy, as well as in organizational development from entrepreneurship to innovation, internationalization, adaptation and sustainable performance. We thus focus on the various strategies used by organizations – for profit corporations as well as not for profit organizations – to create value for different stakeholders, including economic profit and social approval. For this, we analyze how forces like competition, technological change, public policies, societal trends, culture, and expectations at large which impact organizations and how they shape and can be shaped by their strategies. We also take account and investigate how initiatives emerge in organizations and are carried out through organizational politics, governance and design. Finally, we focus on how to make organizations more socially and ecologically sustainable with a focus on societal challenges in the Global South.
The SGS Department comprises a diverse group of active researchers with a strong international involvement. Department members publish in the top journals in strategy, management and organizational studies, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Law, Economics & Organization, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Management Science, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal to name a few.
iv) Engaged in the profession and with society at large
Besides being active in research and teaching, department members are very involved in professional academic associations (AOM, AIB, CCC, EGOS, EURAM, SMS, IFSAM, SIOE), holding office and organizing thematic workshops. We also consult business firms, not for profit associations and governments and are a sought-after source of expertise in the media.
