We study how ion channels function. Currently, most of our work focuses on one class of ion channels, the acid-sensing ion channels, short “ASICs”. These channels are activated by a drop in pH and have many physiological and pathological functions in the nervous system. In our work we aim at understanding with molecular detail how these channels are activated by acid, and how their activity affects neuronal signaling. ASICs are highly regulated channels. We investigate such regulatory mechanisms. We use tools of electrophysiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, structural and kinetic modeling and cell biology.
