Research activities

Research laboratories

There are eight research laboratories at the Institute of Psychology; various projects are carried out by each of these laboratories.

BEAM (Brain electrophysiology attention movement laboratory)

The Brain Electrophysiology Attention Movement laboratory joints cognitive and sport sciences to extend fundamental knowledge on brain dynamics underlying attentional and motor mechanisms, and to develop appropriate interventions on cognitive and physical practices.

The BEAM lab aspires to become active in the field of EEG by favoring scientific exchanges of existing and emerging methods within a wide network of institutional and scientific collaborations. Our mission is also to promote continuing education for the next generations of young researchers through a series of seminars and workshops.

CARLA (Cognitive and Affective Regulation Laboratory)

In our laboratory, the Cognitive and Affective Regulation LAboratory (CARLA), we aim at bridging research of the applied and basic sciences in the domain of cognition and affect. We focus on fundamental cognitive and affective processes regulating human behaviour, in particular in applied fields. Our ultimate goal is to understand how these fundamental processes shape our actions and nourish our resources to enhance health and well-being and can be used to improve therapeutic interventions.

CEPCO (Research center in vocational psychology and career counseling)

The Research Center for Vocational Psychology and Career Counseling (CePCO) was founded in 2016 by Prof. Jérôme Rossier and colleagues. Its mission is to maintain the high quality of training and research in vocational and counseling psychology at the University of Lausanne.

Research focuses on counseling and vocational guidance, personality and work. The center’s main emphases are, (1) the study of individual resources and risk factors (eg, normal and pathological personality attributes) and contextual factors (eg social support) that influence occupational integration and functioning, and (2) a global understanding of career paths and dynamics.

In collaboration with the counseling department, CePCO provides training and teaching for students of the Master in Counseling and Guidance of the University of Lausanne.

FADO (Family and Development Research Center)

The FAmily and DevelOpment research center (FADO) is a lab in the University of Lausanne's Institute of Psychology, which is part of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.

Our goals are to promote research in family and developmental psychology and encourage dialogue between researchers and practitioners. Our work focuses on the psychosocial development of children and adolescents and on marital, parental, coparenting and family dynamics at various life stages.

We also research the transition to parenthood, transitions in childhood and adolescence, and other family life stages. We seek to better understand children's and adolescents' relationships and how to prevent or deal with relationship troubles in families. To explore the significance of our observations, we situate them in the wider social and cultural context.

FADO also provides teaching for undergraduate and doctoral students, and training for professionals through continuing education courses.

LABCD (Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Development)

The Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Development is composed of 2 groups:

  • Cognitive Arithmetic and Numerical Development in Youngsters (CANDY)
    Director: Professor Catherine THEVENOT
  • Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (NLM)
    Director: Professor Pierre LAVENEX

These two groups, specialized in the domains of experimental cognitive psychology and neurobiology, work both independently and in collaboration. Their interests focus on the evolution of learning, memory and cognition across the lifespan, and the development of the brain regions which underlie these capacities.

LARPsyDIS (Laboratoire de recherche en psychologie des dynamiques intra- et inter-subjective
