Roundtable on Academic Freedom
Ideally, scholars have control on their knowledge production. Evidence in many countries shows the conditions of academic knowledge are under threat, both for economic and political reasons. This roundtable will address the following questions: what are the current challenges of academic freedom in Europe and in other democratic countries? How does political sociology contribute to understand this trend and resist to it?
The scheduled participants to the roundtable are Alexander Dmitriev, Andrea Pető, Daniel A. Smith, and Alberta Giorgi (moderator)
Alexander Dmitriev is a historian, researcher at the Laboratory for the History of Science and Technology in EPFL and visiting researcher at the Center East European Studies at the University of Bremen. Previously, he was head of the Center of the History of Ideas and Sociology of Knowledge at the HSE University in Moscow.
Andrea Pető is Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University, Vienna Austria and a Doctor of Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She is specialist in European comparative social and gender history, gender and politics, women’s movements, oral history, and the Holocaust.
Daniel A. Smith is Professor and Chair in the Department of Political Science, University of Florida. A past-president of the State Politics and Policy Section of the APSA, Smith is currently studying how initiatives, redistricting, and electoral laws shape political participation in the United States.
Alberta Giorgi is Senior Assistant Professor in sociology of culture and communication at the University of Bergamo and research fellow at the University Coimbra and the GSRL (CNRS). She is currently the Chair of the Political Sociology Network Group of the European Sociological Association.
