PhD position in Social and Political Sciences and Law

The Institute of Political Studies (IEP) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (SSP) is inviting applications for a position of FE doctoral student co-directed with the Law School of the Faculty of Law, Criminal Sciences and Public Administration (FDCA).

The position is being advertised as part of the STRIVE project : ‘Cycling in Switzerland! For an ecological and social transformation of mobility’. It is part of the activities of the University Observatory for Cycling and Active Mobility (OUVEMA).

Your activities

You are part of the consortium for the ‘Cycling in Switzerland! For an ecological and social transformation of mobility’ project, which brings together 6 professors from 5 UNIL faculties, 3 young researchers and numerous partners in the field.

You are working on module 3 (What are the conditions for implementing a transformative cycling policy?), which is supervised by Julie Pollard and Véronique Boillet. The aim of this module is to understand the discrepancies between the political objectives, the normative framework and the processes for implementing policies relating to the development of cycling.

Your tasks will be to design, implement and analyse :

  • A study of the normative framework for cycling policies in Switzerland;
  • A survey of public and private sector players;
  • Case studies of cycling development projects.

PhD or First Assistant in Geography or Sociology

As part of the STRIVE project ‘Cycling in Switzerland! For an ecological and social transformation of mobility’, the Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) is opening a position for a doctoral student OR a first assistant for the University Observatory of Cycling and Active Mobility (OUVEMA).

Depending on the profile of the candidate, he/she will be given the position of doctoral student (without a doctorate, with the aim of completing a doctoral thesis) or first assistant (with a doctorate) and the tasks associated with the corresponding position.

 

OPTION 1 : PhD

Your activities:

You are working in module 1 (What are the conditions required for widespread cycling among the population?) supervised by Profs. Patrick Rérat (geographer) and Fabien Ohl (sociologist).

Your tasks will be to:

  • Produce a doctoral thesis based on the project;
  • Carry out a questionnaire survey - distributed by a polling institute to 5000 people in Switzerland - on the (non) use of bicycles;
  • Conduct biographical interviews with people who have recently taken up cycling (again).

You are working in module 1 (What are the conditions required for widespread cycling among the population?) supervised by Profs. Patrick Rérat (geographer) and Fabien Ohl (sociologist).

Your tasks will include :

  • Publish scientific articles based on the project;
  • Conduct a questionnaire survey - distributed by a polling institute to 5,000 people in Switzerland - on cycling (and not cycling);
  • Conduct biographical interviews with people who have recently taken up cycling (again);
  • Tasks relating to the management and promotion of the project (max. 20%).

PhD Position in Transportation Engineering

As part of the project ‘Cycling in Switzerland! For an ecological and social transformation of mobility’ funded by the STRIVE programme, the Department of Operations at the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC) at the University of Lausanne invites applications for a PhD position in Transportation Engineering.

The individuals involved in this project are part of the University Observatory of Cycling and Active Mobility (OUVEMA), an interdisciplinary research platform on cycling and active mobility (www.unil.ch/ouvema) and of the consortium of the project, which brings together 6 professors from 5 UNIL faculties, 3 young researchers and numerous partners in the field.

Information relating to the position:

👉 Duration of contract: 48 months, 100%.

The successful candidate will be affiliated to the doctoral programme in Business Analytics:

Your activities

  • 85% of your time will be dedicated to the completion of a 4-year PhD thesis, supervised by Prof. Virginie Lurkin (HEC), in collaboration with Honorary Prof. Bengt Kayser from the Institute of Sports Sciences at the University of Lausanne for the public health aspects.
  • 15% of your time will be dedicated to teaching as well as supporting the research activities of Professor Virginie Lurkin.

You will work on module 2 of the project, titled ‘Déplacements’, which aims to understand and analyse :

  • The potential of cycling for modal shift based on the Mobility and Transport Microcensus,
  • The conditions for combining cycling with public transport,
  • New mobility scenarios and their health and environmental impacts.

The anticipated tasks, directly linked to the conduct of the doctoral thesis, are as follows:

  • Analysis of the Mobility and Transport Microcensus,
  • Discrete choice analysis (based on a questionnaire survey),
  • Agent-Based Modelling (ABM),
  • Quantification of the effects of an increase in the cycling modal share on public health and the CO2 balance.
