Drosophila melanogaster -known as fruit fly- is an indispensable experimental model for neuroscience research. Remarkably, 75% of the genes linked to human pathologies, including those affecting the brain, are preserved in
Drosophila. The departmental Fly facility presents neuroscientists with an ideal setting for the cultivation, nurturing, and behavioral testing of transgenic animals. The Facility is hosting sophisticated instruments that allow more than 10 different types of behaviors to be studied. Presently, the facility accommodates over 2000 distinct transgenic fly strains that are paramount in investigating diseases such as neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders.
