A critical societal development are the technological changes that come with new work models and emerging social security risks. Technology is changing the way individuals work, and the nature of the job contracts they take. New job market realities include gig work, being self-employed or working for multiple employers, being employed part-time and on temporary or fixed-term contracts. These developments bear critical consequences for social insurance systems as individual may not be eligible for coverage, for example, in pension systems. Current research is based on data from a survey carried out with the OECD in 25 countries. Further conceptual research will review selected dimensions in the social welfare systems.
