Legume plants form an endosymbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This symbiosis allows them to access atmospheric nitrogen, reducing their reliance on soil nitrogen resources. In an agricultural context, legumes can help decrease the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and their associated environmental footprint.
Our team is dedicated to investigating the genetic innovations contributing to the remarkable symbiotic nitrogen-fixing capacity of legumes. To achieve this, we explore the natural variation across species, ranging from model organisms such as Lotus japonicus to important crops like pea, lupin, and soybean.
