Presentation

My main research interests are centred around issues related to language variation and change. I investigate questions about how and why language varies across social groups, place, and time, primarily through a quantitative lens.
My principal on-going project explores language use in an Inuit community in northern Canada, which is shifting away from the indigenous language and becoming Engish-dominant. I am interested in the impact of this shift on residents’ identity and sociolinguistic practices, and also in the development of this new variety of English.
Other research projects focus on regional varieties of English, such as those found in Newfoundland and Northern Ireland. My newest study delves into the cognitive processes behind adjectival intensification, to better understand how people make linguistic choices.
