Guest Researchers

CIRM occasionally invites researchers to collaborate with its members on issues related to mountain regions. Stays can range from a few days to several months.

Proposals and inquiries should be directed to Emmanuel Reynard, Director of CIRM

Binod Dawadi, Tribhuvan Univesity, Kathmandu – 02.05.22 to 30.05.22

In May 2022, with the support of the Herbette Foundation, Professor Binod Dawadi visited the University of Lausanne (UNIL) at the invitation of the CIRM. His visit focused on exploring interdisciplinary research projects related to mountain issues and their implementation, as well as discussing potential future research collaborations between UNIL and Tribhuvan University.

Professor Dawadi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, specializing in climatology and hydrology. His research has particularly focused on the impacts of climate change in the Himalayas, climate patterns in Nepal, and climate change-related risks.

During his stay, Professor Dawadi delivered three lectures on climate issues in Nepal, met with numerous researchers affiliated with CIRM, and engaged with CIRM partners such as the Mountain Research Initiative and the International Mountain Society. He also participated as an invited guest at the plenary session of the Forum Paysages, Alpes, Parcs (FoLAP) of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences. These discussions provided a foundation for future scientific collaborations between CIRM and Tribhuvan University.

Bogdan Mihai, Bucarest University, Romania – 21.03.22 to 25.03.22

From March 21 to 25, 2022, the CIRM hosted Professor Bogdan Mihai from the Faculty of Geography, Department of Geomorphology-Soil Science-Geomatic of the University of Bucharest, Romania.

During his stay, Professor Mihai delivered a lecture on land management issues in the Romanian Carpathians and collaborated with Mélanie Clivaz and Emmanuel Reynard on the "Landscape Evolution" module of the Val d’Hérens 1950/2050 project. His team will be creating landscape evolution maps for the Val d’Hérens using satellite imagery in the coming months.

Ludovic Ravanel, CNRS, France – 01.01.21 to 31.05.21

From January 1 to May 31, 2021, Ludovic Ravanel, a senior researcher at CNRS specializing in geomorphological processes in high mountain areas and their effects on high-altitude practices and infrastructures, was a visiting researcher at the CIRM.

During his five-month research stay at CIRM, he continued his work on the effects of geomorphological transformations on mountaineering routes, focusing on the Valais Alps. He worked closely with Jacques Mourey, a postdoctoral researcher at CIRM since October 2020. Ravanel also initiated research on the evolution of glacier faces, in collaboration with Christophe Lambiel, a CIRM member. In addition to his research activities, Ravanel gave several conferences and two training sessions for mountain professionals on climate change and its impacts on mountain practices.
