Natural processes can be described mathematically with systems of partial differential equations. A mathematical description is essential for quantifying and predicting these processes (e.g. propagation of tsunami or seismic waves). The equations are usually nonlinear and coupled so that analytical solutions are not available. In scientific computing one approximates these equations with various numerical methods and applies state-of-the-art parallel numerical algorithms on CPU (Achilles at ISTE) and GPU (Octopus at ISTE) computational clusters to perform high-resolution numerical simulations in 2D and 3D.
