European Commons and Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures Conferences 2024
John Knox Center, Geneva & International Union for Conservation of Nature, Gland | 9-13 December 2024

In an increasingly urban world, rural people, be they Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities or Rural Communities, are often left behind. Yet, in order to move towards the 2050 vision of “living in harmony with nature”, we need to make sure that no one is left behind. This means that there also needs to be resolutions by decision makers to be inclusive and include all rural communities in decision-making processes. While some Indigenous peoples have been relatively successful in creating space within the global policy making institutions, other rural communities have not. One global tool that has been put in place for inclusive conservation of biodiversity is Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures, a measure that also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The objective of this two-part conference is to start the process of creating a space for all rural communities, so that the various 2030 policies can truly be inclusive of these communities and how they govern their common natural resources in all their diversity (waters, forests, pastures, fisheries, game, veld, pannage, estover, turbary, piscary, animals ferae naturae, cayolars, corrales de pesca, etc.).

Co-organised by UNIL, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, International Association for the Studying of the Commons - Europe, and the ICCA Consortium- Europe, this event is set to improve the way rural peoples in Europe are recognized.
