UNIL funding programme for the CIVIS European University

UNIL's funding programme for the CIVIS European University supports UNIL faculties, departments and professional services units in pursuing activities that strengthen the impact of the CIVIS Alliance at UNIL.

The funding programme is open to collaborative initiatives with CIVIS Alliance member universities. As a teacher and/or researcher at UNIL, you can contact the CIVIS UNIT at any time to develop CIVIS teaching or research projects.

2 levels of fundings are available:

Level 1: Visit to a partner university

Presentation

For departing UNIL teaching staff, researchers and staff only.
To establish initial contacts, for example to explore compatibility and ideas for future joint activities.
Applicants may apply for up to 1,000 CHF to cover travel (economy class) and accommodation costs.
Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, if the project is relevant to the objectives of the European University, and are open all year round.
Applications must be submitted at least four weeks before departure from UNIL.

Conditions

Be a UNIL researcher from any discipline - professor and/or young researcher (doctoral or post-doctoral student) -, or UNIL administrative and technical staff.
Have an employment contract at UNIL covering the entire project period.
The application must specify the importance of the contact for potential future collaboration and how the visit could serve to initiate a lasting partnership in research/teaching or institutional relations between UNIL and the partner institution. Funding is granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
The organisation of the trip must strictly apply UNIL Directive 0.8.
The UNIL staff member will be reimbursed by the CIVIS Unit after the trip on presentation of an expense account and supporting documents.

Application procedure

Applications may be submitted at any time of the year, but at least four weeks before departure from UNIL. Please submit the following documents:

Application form for travel funds
For young researchers (doctoral students, post-docs): statement of support from your chair/institute.

Please submit your application by e-mail as a single PDF file to: civis@unil.ch.

The funding decision will be communicated within six weeks of submission. If funding is granted, the proposed activities must be carried out within one year of the date of confirmation of the grant.

Level 2: Organisation of a meeting at UNIL

Presentation

To explore specific ideas for collaboration in teaching or research.
To develop collaboration between administrative departments at different universities.
Applicants may apply for up to 5,000 CHF per initiative.
Expected results: specific action plan for continuing the collaboration.
Examples of joint activities:
- organisation of joint events, workshops, seminars, etc, or
- small-scale collaborative projects, such as a joint thesis, a module, etc.

Conditions

Joint activities in the field of research, teaching and UNIL services are eligible for funding.
The meeting must have a clear objective of initiating or strengthening a CIVIS collaboration with a long-term perspective.
Two other CIVIS universities must be involved in the initiative.
The collaboration being developed must be beneficial and relevant to UNIL.
The CIVIS Unit can advise project leaders on the prospects for collaboration within the framework of the European University.
The budget may cover travel and accommodation costs for colleagues invited from other universities to come to Lausanne and/or for UNIL staff to travel to CIVIS universities. If the meeting takes place in Lausanne, the funding may also cover meals for the group during the activities.
Travel arrangements for UNIL staff and CIVIS guests must strictly comply with UNIL Directive 0.8.
