Fire prevention

This two-module course teaches the principles of material combustion, fire classes and types of extinguisher, using the extinguishing equipment available at UNIL, such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire hoses. All in conditions that are close to the real thing, but in complete safety.

This is a free, mandatory training course aimed at all UNIL staff (excluding students). A refresher course must be taken every five years.

It is available in English and French.

Module 1: Fighting fires

  • 20-minute online training course
  • You must complete module 1 before you can register for the in-person modules

Objectives:

  • Know the emergency numbers at UNIL
  • Identify the conditions that cause a fire
  • Recognise which fire extinguisher to use, depending on the type of fire

Module 2: Extinguishing systems

  • 2-hour, in-person training session in room 1881 of the Geopolis building
  • 4 to 12 participants

Objectives:

  • Understand the conditions necessary for a fire to start
  • Know how to explain the fire triangle
  • Recognise the different classes of fire
  • Practise using extinguishing systems on real fires
