Anyone who moves to the canton of Vaud to attend school and/or training and whose stay exceeds ninety days per year must register with the commune where they live. Registration is compulsory, including for stays in second homes. The deadline for registration is 8 days after arrival.
When registering, the municipality will apply for a residence permit from the Population Service of the Canton of Vaud. A number of documents will be required by the commune of the place of residence in order to compile the file for the residence permit application.
There are costs involved: between CHF 15 and CHF 30, depending on the commune, for the communal registration fee and CHF 65 for the residence permit fee.
To save time, you can pre-register with your commune of residence online for the communes of Lausanne, Crissier and Ecublens. In all cases, this online pre-registration does not replace going to the counter in person (except for the commune of Lausanne, where all procedures can be carried out online).
