Vocational Guidance and Careers Service (SOC)

The Vocational Guidance and Careers Service (SOC) provides information about the courses of study available at the University of Lausanne, supports students throughout their studies until they have successfully completed their course and assists graduates in their transition to the world of work.

Missions

The Vocational Guidance and Careers Service (SOC) provides information on site, by phone, by e-mail and on the internet. It is also available for individual interviews by appointment, online or in person.

The SOC has four core missions:

  • Increase awareness of UNIL and its educational pathways.
  • Make it easier to adapt to university studies.
  • Support students through transitions during their studies.
  • Ease the transition into the world of work.

The Vocational Guidance and Careers Service is open to UNIL students and graduates, as well as people interested in studying at the University of Lausanne (unless they are enrolled in a grammar school, upper or lower secondary school – in this case, it is advisable to first contact the guidance counsellors at their institution).

Course information

Are you looking for information on the courses offered at UNIL? This page will guide you according to the type or level of study that interests you. If you would like advice on your choice of course, take a look at our course guidance:

Course guidance

The SOC offers a range of services to help you choose a course of study or find your bearings during your studies.

Advice is offered online on our information pages for choosing a course of study, as well as through various teaching tools, including, for example, quizzes to find out more about the university environment:

The service offers one-to-one information and advice interviews online for 20 minutes for students, UNIL graduates and postgraduates, as well as people interested in studying at the University of Lausanne. During these online meetings, which are free and confidential, the advisers and counsellors offer information on studying at UNIL, career opportunities, working and learning methods, as well as on job and work placement searches.

Make an information appointment

A free, confidential consultation by appointment with a psychologist specialising in careers advice is available on request for UNIL students and graduates. These consultations provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion of study choices, careers guidance, personal difficulties and support in making decisions at the various stages of university life.

Careers Centre

The Careers Centre is a special service offered by the SOC to support students and graduates in their transition to employment. In particular, it can provide information and advice on career prospects (first job or change of career) and on job and work placement searches (application forms, job interviews, etc.):

  • Advice on career prospects after UNIL
Advice and information online to help people plan their professional future and discover possible career prospects after their studies.
  • An up-to-date information base with advice in the form of self-study training modules for job hunting and putting together applications is available to UNIL students and graduates in the Moodle space. The access key is available on request from centredecarrieres@unil.ch.
  • Job coaching
Personalised job search support is offered in various forms: help in identifying your interests and skills, proofreading CVs and covering letters, advice on job hunting or networking, mock interviews, etc.
  • Internship advertising platform
The Unistages platform is available throughout the year and lists internships in various sectors, whether or not they are created as part of study courses.
Reserved for UNIL students and graduates.
  • Events
Meetings are set up with organisations presenting their sector, their human resources needs and their recruitment policy, as well as with graduates and postgraduates talking about their career paths.
  • Skills review
This procedure involves several interviews with a guidance counsellor or employment psychologist, by appointment. The aim is to take stock of the person's career path and to carry out an in-depth review of their professional pathway. This course is open to former UNIL students with at least three years' professional experience.
