Finance Department

The Finance Department establishes the strategic financial direction of the University of Lausanne, guides the budget process, consolidates the accounts and manages funds. It ensures that financial processes and systems are adapted to meet future challenges.

Overview

The Finance Department is attached to the Rector's Office and provides support to the Rectorate, Faculties, departments and associated organisations. It plans, coordinates and controls the resources and procedures required for sound financial management and the production of relevant and reliable financial information for UNIL.

The Finance Department is made up of four areas:

  • Financial accounting

Services

Planning and analysis

  • Budget: budget production and long-term planning covering funding requirements and approvals according to institutional time frames
  • Budget monitoring: efficient use of UNIL resources
  • Planning and monitoring support: monitoring of UNIL's financial commitments and projects
  • Analysis and control: support for the Rectorate, Faculties and departments on strategic decisions with a financial impact, and project management

Financial accounting

  • Operational accounting: production of UNIL's accounts statements in line with statutory and regulatory requirements  
  • End-of-year and financial reporting: finalisation of UNIL's accounts in accordance with the applicable time frames and standards
  • Cash flow: management and coverage of liquidity requirements
  • Basic data: centralised management of basic financial data and quality assurance

Financial control

  • Compliance and risk: internal audit of compliance and cost eligibility for UNIL and donors
  • Fund management: governance throughout the funding life cycle and financial reporting to donors 
  • Payments: management of UNIL's payments
  • Advice and support: ensuring that the Faculties and departments have a good understanding of financial processes and contribute to an adequate internal control system
  • Foundations accounting: accounting for Foundations associated with UNIL on behalf of their Boards of Trustees

Processes, systems and quality

  • Information system: operational/technical management, ensuring that interfaces meet internal control system requirements, managing interfaces and ensuring consistency between applications
  • Quality: standardisation and documentation of financial processes and continuous improvement 
  • Projects: monitoring and contributing to systems development
  • UNIFIE project (modernisation of financial processes and IT system)
