For SEMP interns

European students can make an internship in Switzerland, even if Switzerland does not participate in Erasmus+ any more. Interns receive a scholarship financed by the Swiss government through the Swiss-European Mobilty Programme (SEMP).

  • Come from a university that has signed the Erasmus+ charter.
  • Incoming applicants must complete their internship before obtaining the degree for which the internship was intended.
  • Come under an exchange agreement that their home university has signed with UNIL in the particular field of study. It is therefore, in theory, and as is usually the case in university exchanges, the home university that announces the student to the UNIL faculty in accordance with the usual nomination rules.
  • The internship must be part of the student's curriculum and must lead to the obtention of ECTS credits (by means of a subsequent internship thesis).
  • The internship must be compulsory or optional (as opposed to a theoretical thesis) as part of the student's curriculum.
  • The internship must meet the definition of an internship as per Management Directive 1.36. In other words, research or field stays will no longer be accepted as SEMP internships. They must be considered as mobility for study purposes.
  • The UNIL faculty has accepted the placement request and the internship is recognised in the balance of the agreement, according to the terms of the agreement.

Note: An additional condition applies in order to benefit from the grant: if the internship remuneration exceeds CHF 2,500/month, the right to the grant ceases.

  1. You must find an internship (paid or not) in a UNIL department. The minimal duration is 2 months (3 months for a clinical internship).
  2. Complete the "Training agreement" form (see in margin) in collaboration with your academic counsellor at your home university, and the UNIL department offering the internship.
  3. Return the form with your signature at the UNIL Office for Social Affairs and Student Mobility (SASME). Beware: the award of a scholarship (CHF 440.- per month for a student from a university participating in the Erasmus+ programme (EU/EFTA); CHF 500.- per month for a student from a non-EU/EFTA university) depends on the available funds and cannot be guaranteed. Scholarships are awarded on a first come first serve basis.
  4. Complete the "Insurance declaration" form (see in margin) and return it to SASME.
  5. SASME will give you a "Scholarship contract". The contract must be signed and returned to SASME. The "Insurance declaration" form must be handed back to SASME at that moment at the latest.
  6. The form "Final report" will be provided by SASME.
  7. The UNIL department providing the internship will provide an internship certificate at the end of your stay.
