For more than two-thirds of young people, apprenticeships, particularly dual apprenticeships, represent a turning point in their career path. For most of them, apprenticeships are not just a way into working life, but also a way of acquiring the skills and knowledge they need to do a job.

As a committed employer, the University of Lausanne is committed to initial vocational training. Every year, it offers apprenticeships in a wide range of technical, scientific and administrative fields.

Apprenticeships: I have questions

Is it possible to complete my apprenticeship with an integrated professional degree?

This will depend on your place of apprenticeship. You can find out more from the contact person indicated on the advert.

Can I get an AFP?

Can I arrange a 3+1 placement?

Yes, UNIL offers 3+1 internships.

Can I do a discovered internship?

How long does an apprenticeship last?

Apprenticeships last 3 years except for computer scientists, graphic designers and polygraphers, who last 4 years.

How many days of classes will I have to attend?

During your training, you’ll have in-school courses as well as a number of inter-company courses. The number of courses you take will depend on the apprenticeship you choose. Click to find out more.

What salary will I receive during my apprenticeship?

  • 1ère 695.-
  • 2ème 925.-
  • 3ème 1275.-
  • 4ème 1685.-

À how many days' holiday will I be entitled to?

You will be entitled to à 5 weeks as well as the bridge between Noël and New Year.

Will I be reimbursed for expenses incurred during my apprenticeship?

L'UNIL reimburses the costs incurred by inter-company courses as well as school and vocational materials.

Can I qualify for a scholarship?

If your parents do not have the necessary means to finance your education, the canton of Vaud may award you a grant. Information on this subject can be found on this page.

If I had difficulties at school during my apprenticeship, would I receive any assistance?

UNIL offers courses via its Language Centre. You will also be able to access support and coaching from the Apprenticeship group (GPA).

When are apprenticeship places published on the UNIL website?

Apprenticeships are published between mid-November and mid-December. But don't forget to visit our apply page, as we sometimes publish vacancies throughout the year.

Can I send an unsolicited application?

Spontaneous applications are not taken into consideration by UNIL as all open positions are advertised on this page.

Have you chosen the course that interests you? UNIL publishes its apprenticeship places every year from mid-November. If one of them appeals to you, all you have to do is prepare your application and apply online.

Your application must include:

  • a covering letter ;
  • a CV ;
  • the transcript of marks for your last 3 school semesters ;
  • your work placement certificates if you have completed any.

How many inter-company courses will I have during my apprenticeship?

This depends on the apprenticeship you choose. You can find all the information in the description of your profession on this site.

What salary will I receive during my apprenticeship?

Year 1: fr. 670 / Year 2: fr. 890 / Year 3: fr. 1230 / Year 4 and trainees 3+1: fr. 1625.

What costs are covered by UNIL?

The UNIL pays you CHF 80 every month to cover the costs of your professional courses. In addition, UNIL will cover any travel and meal expenses related to your inter-company and CEP courses.

How can I get reimbursed for expenses relating to my apprenticeship?

To be reimbursed, simply fill in the expense claim form which you can obtain from your trainer.

Am I insured against accidents?

Yes, you are covered by UNIL for professional and non-professional accidents until 30 days after the end of your contract. We therefore invite you to take out personal accident insurance at the beginning of your apprenticeship.

Am I entitled to an apprenticeship certificate?

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will automatically receive what is known as a « certificate of apprenticeship ». However, if you have completed your apprenticeship and still haven't received it, you can request one on this page.

Support is offered by the Apprenticeship group  in various matters, particularly for the general branches of vocational courses, as well as individualised support. 

In addition, the Centre for Continuing Education  located at Mont-sur-Lausanne offers a number of training courses specifically designed for apprentices. We invite you to take a look at the courses on offer.

Participation in these various activities should be discussed with your trainer, who will be happy to provide you with further information.
