Description of the examination

Evaluations and modalities
The pre-admission examination is designed to attest to your linguistic, reflective, analytical and cultural abilities.

The examination covers the following subjects:

  1. French
  2. Two languages to choose from: Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian, Spanish, German, English, Russian
  3. History
  4. Philosophy

(1) If you choose the written form for the history assessment, the philosophy assessment will be oral, and vice versa.

Conditions for success

The conditions for admission are set out in the Faculty of Arts admission regulations for people who do not have a degree that meets the UNIL registration requirements, available on the Faculty website.

How to register with the Faculty

In parallel à with your registration with the UNIL Registration and Enrolment Service, it is imperative that you submit a registration file to the Faculty secretariat in accordance with the above timetable. Late applications will not be accepted.

Deadlines

Your application must be submitted by the 4th week of the teaching period preceding the summer session in which you wish to sit the preliminary examination.

As a reminder, you must register with UNIL's Registration and Enrolment Service by 30 April prior to the summer session during which you wish to sit the preliminary examination.

Composition of the application

Your registration file must contain:

  • a copy of passport or identity card;and for foreign nationals, a copy of residence or work permit;
  • a légalis;e translation of the documents mentionedés above which are not rédigés in French, German, Italian or English;

Eligibility period

In accordance with Article 9 of the Directive 3.16 on Preliminary Entrance Examinations for University Baccalaureate Courses in UNIL Faculties, successful completion of the preliminary entrance examination entitles the candidate to admission to the faculty for 2 years from the autumn semester immediately following the examination session.

Transfer to another faculty

People who have passed the preliminary entrance examination for the Faculties of Arts, Social and Political Sciences, or Theology and Religious Studies have the option of changing to one of the other two faculties. Conditions: they must not have previously failed the preliminary examination of the faculty in question, must in principle have spent at least two semesters at the faculty for which the preliminary entrance examination was passed and must have obtained at least 30 ECTS credits.
