Data stewardship - support for data management

Data stewardship or data governance encompasses all the activities needed to support researchers in managing their research data throughout its lifecycle (creation, processing, analysis, preservation, access, sharing and re-use).

Data stewardship

Transparent and responsible data management is thus one of the essential elements of science in the 21st century.

The support provided by Data stewardship should make it possible to better implement the principles FAIR and s'articulate according to the areas and specific research projects.

On the subject of Open research data, the FAIR principles are now considered to be one of the priorities for the Open Science agenda: research data must êulate:

  • Feasy à to find
  • Accessible
  • Interopérables
  • Réusable

Yet this raises complex and délicate issues – disciplinary, éthical, legal, méthological, technical issues, etc. – and requires support for researchers·e·s.

Tasks of the Data Stewards

The main tasks of the UNIL data stewards are to provide support, advice, development and expertise to researchers on issues relating to the planning, management, integrity, quality, accessibility, openness, sharing and preservation of research data.

To put these missions and activities into practice, the following tasks have been defined by UNIRIS:

  • Assisting in the preparation, drafting and review of data management plans (Data Management Plan) and the expert use of the DMPonline UNIL tool;
  • Support researchers on the ethical and legal issues of data management, with the departments concerned;
  • Sensitise researchers to the requirements of UNIL, public funding bodies and scientific publishers with regard to the management and openness of research data;
  • Support researchers in opening up, sharing and reusing existing research data;
  • Support researchers in documentation, data organisation, choice of standards, formats and metadata;
  • Advising and assisting researchers with data archiving and development;
  • Assist researchers with the processing, management and safeguarding of personal or sensitive data (anonymisation, data de-identification);

Data Stewards within the UNIL ecosystem

In order to meet the objectives set out in the Swiss National Open Science Strategy, the UNIL Management has allocated an extraordinary fund for a period of 3 years (2022-2024). This measure has enabled the recruitment of data stewards who provide direct support to UNIL's research community in the transition towards and maintenance of a new scientific culture that is necessary for the Open research Data.

Within the UNIL cosyst, the data stewards will act as the first point of contact and support for researchers within the faculties, providing a link between specific support (a research area) and the general support provided by UNIRIS. The data stewards will also provide support and advice to researchers by referring them to other areas of expertise (individuals or internal units) such as the DCSR, CER, PACTT, etc.
